THE PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT |
The performing arts department contributes to the overall purpose and objectives of Germantown Academy by providing strong academic and extracurricular programs in music, drama and media arts. The performing arts department provides a foundation in music to all students in prek through 8th grade through the general music courses and choral and instrumental ensembles in Lower and Middle School. In the Upper School, students are required to fulfil one credit in the arts. This may be realized in the performing arts or in the visual arts. In the performing arts students may choose from a variety of music ensembles, music theory, drama electives, courses in film and video, MIDI and recording arts. Extracurricular activities are offered in all three disciplines.
We provide a curriculum that promotes curiosity, reasoning and questioning, imagination and aesthetics, an understanding of oneself and others, clear communication, broad application of knowledge and satisfaction in learning. Our faculty models high standards of performance along with a spirit of kindness and cooperation. We help students find a place to “fit in” while working to increase their sense of self-worth, recognizing and supporting the unique talents of each individual. We prepare students to continue in the performing arts in college and beyond, whether as a vocation or an avocation. | |

Department Philosophy |
We believe that the performing arts are an integral part of the human spirit. Throughout history, in every corner of the world, the performing arts have reflected every aspect of our existence. They have provided a means for expressing life’s inner most feelings; they have been a joy, a comfort, a call to battle, an adjunct to religion. The performing arts, in all their variety, have been constant companions.
Using the best musical and theatrical literature, advanced technology and fine sequential teaching materials, we provide opportunities to develop the understandings, skills and values related to the performing arts in our students to the highest possible measure through experience, study and performance.
We also seek to enhance our students’ understanding of themselves and the peoples of the world through the performing arts. Ultimately, our hope is that our students come to appreciate and enjoy the arts for a lifetime.
